The annual World Pancake Racing Championships were held on shrove Tuesday right in the heart of Exeter in Devon. The event organised by Wacky Nation, used Exeter based South West Athletics Academy’s colourful red and blue portable track as their centrepiece and had 15 teams competing for the world championship title. Shoppers in the Princesshay centre couldn’t believe their eyes or ears as teams competed against each other to run and flip the length of the track, cheered on by a large crowd. After some closely fought races, it came down to a flip-off between two local businesses, Crowdcube and Turner Lockyear Barnfield, with Crowdcube eventually crossing the line first and taking the World Pancake Racing crown. The light hearted, fun event raising money for Age UK is supported by South West Athletics Academy because it is a unique way of bringing athletics right into the heart of a community and making it fun, accessible and inclusive. Before and after the main event the track was open to local children to try and flip pancakes while racing for the finish line.
