QUOTES FROM ATHLETES FROM PREVIOUS BELGIUM TRIPS
Belgium was amazing! A great new experience and I had a lovely time, enjoyed every moment with everyone. Thanks to the team and Sonya. Jade – Sprinter
Really well organised trip, great competition – excellent standard competition. Fantastic experience for athletes, enjoyed opportunity to see other coaches working with athletes and to work briefly with athletes on the trip. Recommend this trip to other coaches and athletes. Stephen – high jump
An excellent initiative to provide athletes a unique international experience and the opportunity to mingle and compete with 1st class talent can be incredibly valuable. SWAAs dedication and methodology to take our athletes to their next level. It was fun. Lewis – sprinter and triple jumper
SW TEAM PERFORMS IN BELGIUM
A successful team of track and field athletes from the south west have just returned from competing at the International Antwerp Athletics Gala in Belgium. This Flanders Cup competition in its 50th year was attended by a host of international athletes and a development team of talented young South West athletes.
Many of these regional standard athletes have already competed at national level at the English Schools championships and are hoping to compete at senior level and found the whole experience hugely inspiring.
Sonya Ellis of South West Athletics Academy and organiser of the trip said “ the purpose of this trip is to give talented athletes the opportunity to compete on the international stage prior to the pressure of being selected at GB level. This experience motivates them to focus on their training and helps with their ambitions to compete at a national level. The team ethos is very strong and we all support each other.”
This successful trip to Belgium has been a regular event over the last 15 years with many of those going subsequently representing their country at international competitions such as the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.
Katie Olding of Exeter who competed in the 800m said” ….competing at an international level was a really good opportunity and very different to anything I have experienced before. Overall the tour was amazing” This was echoed by Ben Gibb of Yeovil Olympiads, competing in Javelin and 100m, who also said” it was a great chance for people to learn how to compete out of their comfort zone.”
There are already plans to take a south west team to an international indoor competition over the winter to repeat the success of this tour. If you would like to sponsor such events or other South West Athletics Academy events please contact Sonya Ellis on 07745 616852 or on [email protected]
